Travelling to Exmouth – Our Tips

Going to Exmouth is certainly a must-do when you’re visiting Western Australia. From the spectacular oceans of Turquoise Bay to the quaint Exmouth Town, this rare gem is a perfect complement to your holiday.

However, if it’s your first time travelling to this beautiful town, there are a few things that you need to know. So read on to find out our top tips for travelling to Exmouth.

It’s hot!

Exmouth is a scorcher, with temperatures reaching well above 40 degrees in the summer seasons (December – March), so be prepared with your best cooling summer clothes. You can also pack the following items to help you when you’re out and about:

  • Sunscreen (super important! The Australian sun is damaging and can give you skin cancer)
  • A trusty hat or cap
  • A water bottle to carry with you
  • Flip flops
  • Beachwear and towels (if you’re going to the beach)

The Australian heat is certainly one to take precautions. So stay hydrated, keep cool, and watch out for any signs of heat stress when you’re in Exmouth.

The stores in the town centre are filled with all these summer necessities like sunscreens and snorkelling gear, so no worries if you forget them!

Activities and tours are seasonal

One of the coolest things to do is swim with the whale sharks when you’re in Exmouth. However, the season to swim with whale sharks is from March to the end of September. Meanwhile, if you’re interested in seeing the humpback whale migration, their tours go from August to November.

There are other tours and activities which run all year round, but if you’d like to experience some of these seasonal tours, then it’s good to plan your time around them.

Plan your meals and groceries

Exmouth has only two grocery stores, and they are both IGA’s. So take note if you’re thinking of visiting the town and getting supplies. You should also take note of their opening and closing hours during the day of your visit, as most of them close by 7pm.

Most shops open early and close early in Exmouth. So while there’s an ample supply of cafes and pastries in the mornings, most of them close by the afternoon. During the evening, there are a couple of pubs and bars available.

You need a car

Unfortunately, to really see Exmouth in all its beauty, you’ll need a car to run around. There are plenty of car rental companies such as Avis, Budget, and Hertz which offers quality cars that you can pick up directly from the airport.

While we did not rent a 4WD during our trip, it is advisable if you’d like to visit beaches that’s only accessible through a 4WD.

So those are our handy tips if you’re planning to travel to Exmouth. We hope that these tips will help you have the best holiday in one of the most iconic places in Western Australia! If you’re looking for a place to stay in Perth, check out our Hillarys and Cannington homestays.
