We in Perth are proud of our beaches.
From the sandy white sands to the clear blue waters, there’s just so much to love about the beach.
Since it’s the peak of summer, there are just so many things you can do on a day at the beach – like swimming, snorkelling, picnics, and surfing!
So here’s a compilation of our favourite beaches in Perth.
Mettams Pool
Our personal favourite, Mettam’s Pool, is just such a joy to swim in. Located along West Coast Drive, which is the unofficial beach capital of Perth, this lovely pool is a popular spot among children, families, and the elderly.
True to its name, the waters in Mettams is relatively calm and ‘pool-like’, which is a massive plus for us. The beach is also a popular place to snorkel, and you’ll be able to see many fishes and other marine life, not to mention gorgeous reefs.

Cottesloe Beach
Cottesloe Beach is so famous in Perth that it almost feels like a sin not to include it in a ‘Best Beach’ list. This beach is a hotspot for tourists, and it’s great for swimming, snorkelling, and surfing. It’s also another family-friendly beach that’s great for kids.
There’s ample shade and grassy land for a nice picnic, which is a popular thing to do if you’re in the area. If a picnic is not your thing, there’s also the iconic Cottesloe Beach Hotel to grab a pint of beer with some fantastic bar food.
Location: Marine Parade, Cottesloe 6011
South Beach
If you’re headed down south of the river, then be sure to check out Fremantle’s South Beach. This beautiful beach is another beautiful place, and it’s often visited by families with children because of the calm waters.
Bonus point? This beach has a pontoon that you can swim up to!
South Beach is another great place that’s well-equipped for a picnic. What’s great about the picnic area is the free barbeque pits, picnic tables, and timber gazebos readily available for public use.
Location: Marine Terrace, South Fremantle 6162
Scarborough Beach
Scarborough Beach was recently redeveloped, and what a beauty it is!
The beach has strong waves, making it a popular spot for surfers. It’s also a great place to go kitesurfing or windsurfing. While plenty of swimmers are around, the beach is not the most kid-friendly because of its strong currents and rips. So be careful with kids in this one!
The beach is within walking distance from Scarborough’s lively town, with pubs, eateries, and even a Coles supermarket. The beach plays host to the Scarborough Sunset Markets during summer and winter, which sees many vendors selling delicious food!
Location: The Esplanade, Scarborough 6019
Coogee Beach
Sitting across the magnificent backdrop of Freemantle is Coogee Beach! This beach is so wonderful that it was acclaimed as one of Western Australia’s best beaches.
Coogee Beach has crystal clear waters that are usually flat, so it’s a perfect beach to bring children. It also had a beautiful view of the jetty and the sunsets, and there’s also a playground for kids nearby! It’s certainly not one to miss if you’re looking for a good beach!
Be it north or south of the river, Perth has some of the most beautiful beaches. Our only advice is to swim between the flags and be on the lookout for strong currents and rips. Otherwise, a day at the beach is a must-do if you’re in Perth.
